Transcription of civil status acts

In accordance with the Law on civil status acts, no. 100 from 26.04.2001, civil status acts (birth, marriage/divorce, name change, etc.) of the Moldovan citizens issued by the competent authorities of foreign countries have prove power in the Republic of Moldova only if they are transcribed in the registers of civil status records of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, the civil status documents issued by the authorities of a foreign state after August 17, 2001 have to be legalized and transcribed in the registers of civil status records of the Republic of Moldova, immediately after their issuance, in order to obtain Moldovan civil status certificates.

For this, civil status documents need to be notary translated into Romanian and further legalized (two separate legalizations are required, one for the civil status act and one for the notary translation of the act).

For transcribing children's birth certificates, the following documents in original will be submitted:

  • request for transcribing the birth certificate;
  • child's birth certificate legalized with Apostille stamp;
  • notary translation of the child's birth certificate in Romanian, legalized with Apostille stamp;
  • Valid parents' identity documents. In case of Moldovan citizens – national ID cards/Moldovan passports;
  • birth certificates of parents;
  • marriage certificate of parents. If it is issued by the authorities of a foreign state, it has to be legalized and / or transcribed (depending on its date of issue) under the conditions specified above, and after obtaining the transcribed marriage certificate it will be possible to request the transcript of the birth certificate.

Transcription of birth certificates is FREE OF CHARGE.

For transcribing the marriage certificates, the following documents in original will be submitted:

  • request for transcribing the marriage certificate;
  • marriage certificate / extract from the register of marriages (will contain information on the date and place of birth of spouses) legalized with Apostille stamp;
